(And for you sir? Yes, I will have the crow this evening along with a side of ignorance and arrogance)
Only in Division 1-A College Football do we seemingly stop playing the season based on some arbitrary measure. Once again, we are guaranteed controversy by a system which was designed to prevent or reduce such matters. While Auburn and Oregon were anointed over TCU to play for the Mythical National Championship, the Horned Frogs will end this season the #2 ranked team in the nation, boasting a 13-0 perfect record. Just how does BCS Executive Director, Bill Hancock, sleep at night? He, along with every other BCS apologist which walks the earth, knows that TCU belongs in the conversation with Auburn and Oregon. Everyone knows that we cannot emphatically surmise that TCU would lose a game to either of the aforementioned programs. Rather than test this theory, we will just end the season prematurely with two unbeatens sitting atop the final polls.
Let's assume that Oregon wins on January 10th. Does College Football realize how foolish it will look with the final polls resembling the following:
1. Oregon 13-0
2. TCU 13-0
3. Auburn 13-1
Under this scenario, the season is declared over and Oregon is the "national champion." Um, huh? Isn't there one more game? All TCU did was obliterate the #5 ranked Utah Utes (ranking at time of meeting) on their home field as well as defeat a very good #4 ranked Wisconsin Badgers squad, who hung 83 points on fellow murderers row frat boy Indiana.
Forthcoming FACT alert: the only remotely tough games Wisconsin had this season were against Michigan State and Ohio State. FACT.
The rest of the Big 10 was comic fodder and completely unworthy and offensive to even softened criminals. Essentially President Gee, your conference affiliation is to one which is gooey and ill-prepared. How could Wisconsin lose this game? Just how is this possible? It was a foregone conclusion that they were going to destroy TCU. All I heard since the end of the regular season was how Wisconsin's offensive line, outweighing TCU's defensive line by 60 pounds per man, was going to dominate this game and Mack Truck 'em to death. Epic analytical and prognostication fail.
Even I thought TCU would be a bit disinterested in this game, since they were slighted regarding title worthiness. I was wrong. Both of these teams came to play. TCU was simply the better football team. They weren't just the better team yesterday, they were the better team all season. I wonder if they could beat Auburn or Oregon? Thanks to our current system, wonder is all we get. We all deserve so much better. President Obama has an opportunity to do something about this. Not in the judicial manner which so many hope and pray for, but in the traditional symbolic manner which we all know is possible. Rest assured, the winner of the Oregon/Auburn game will be invited to the White House to visit with President Obama. Mr. President, please do the right thing here by inviting TCU to accompany the other team and acknowledge what an utter failure the BCS system is (@playoffsnow). You've complained about this system in the past, Mr. President. You have the power to bring national attention to this matter in a way which just might wake a few people up from their 8-track tape addicted slumber that is anointing two teams to play for a mythical national championship. College football fans across the nation are counting on you to do the right thing.
May the sun alway shine on your pen/keyboard, made lovingly from the quills of the roosters, who's songs you enjoy so much.
