Aloha means hello. It has been a while. Rest assured, there are a litany of topics I could cover based on the time lapse since my last post. Who am I kidding? I knew exactly where I was going as soon as I had some time to commit to a blog post: The selection process for March Madness. I actually believe the NCAA Selection Committee is a devoid of rationale and sports intellect. This past Sunday, they actually made the BCS Honks appear like professors. I'll give you the case of the Texas Longhorns and their #4 seed they received while Florida received a #2. Let's break it down a bit further.
The Selection Committee did an abysmal job of seeding this season. I'm not sure what happened. One thing I know is only 3 of the committee members have actual basketball playing experience. That, in and of itself, is criminal. Would we elect a judge without a judicial background as a lawyer? In a word, no.
In short, Texas got jobbed, hosed, screwed, dissed, etc. If we use the Ken Pomeroy ratings as the benchmark, and why shouldn't we, Texas comes in at No. 4 in the nation. This puts them well ahead of Florida who comes in at 19th.
Let's look at overall records and conference strength, shall we?
Texas: 27-7 overall, 13-3 in conference
Florida: 26-7 overall, 13-3 in conference
As Peter Bean pointed out at Burnt Orange Nation, it should be noted that The Big 12 was the 3rd toughest conference in the country while the SEC was way in the back at 7th. Um, did the Selection Committee meet with Bill Hancock for guidance?
Texas beat UNC in Greensboro earlier in the season. Yet the committee decided what was essentially a road victory against UNC matters not. Florida lost to Jacksonville (Pom rating: 176) and Central Florida (Pom rating: 100). Texas' worst loss? That would be to Colorado who boasts a Pom rating of 49. Florida being a No. 2 is inexcusable. The fact that Dan Beebe let this happen is an atrocity. Pomeroy's ratings should actually be the guiding light for these fossils that pretend they know what the hell they are doing. They haven't a clue and this indisputable fact was on display this past Sunday.
All of this being said, the opening weekend of the tournament is in my top 3 sporting events of the year. My only wish is we could eradicate the lunacy and stupidity that occupies the process of who is actually on the Tournament Selection Committee.
